How We Work

To discover more about us begin by giving us a call or visiting us at our showroom at West Littleton, near Bath.

Once you have made an appointment we will arrange to visit you anywhere from Cornwall to North Yorkshire.

We will view your home with a designer`s eye, noting the layout and getting a feel for the ambience. During that time we will take measurements and may photograph or sketch any interesting features. We will then explain how we project manage our part of the contract and relate to the others involved such as builders, electricians and flooring specialists. Above all we will listen to all your requirements and how the room needs to work for you.

After all it is your home!

Conception

The next stage is to provide a floor plan and elevational drawings; with these you will be able to see exactly what we are proposing.

A second meeting is arranged where we sit with you and invite you to comment on our drawings. We analyse the layout with you in depth, adding or taking away items as necessary and talking over materials and finishes. Choice of door style, type of work surfaces and the all important design details will be a major part of this discussion.

At this point we will also provide you with an estimate of cost.

Now the project is really under way.

Build and Installation

Together we set an installation date. We then conduct a comprehensive technical survey at your home to double check all measurements and ensure all aspects of the installation will run smoothly. At this stage we will provide you with a formal contract outlining all aspects of our commitments. We will also ask you for a deposit.

The workshop will now commence to build your furniture. Much of this is done by hand and is individual to you and so takes a little longer than when buying a mass produced product.

The results are well worth it!

If you have chosen a hardwood kitchen it is delivered ready to be installed.

Many of our kitchens are hand painted however, and they arrive primed to be finished by a decorative artist. Once it has been fitted you will have the fun of deciding on the colour and watching as the finishing process brings the furniture to life.

All our craftsmen are specialists in installation of bespoke furniture and their skill and attention to detail is extraordinary. Like us they want the finished product to provide many years of pleasure and good service.

Signing Off

Once we have completed the installation to our satisfaction, all appliances are working and the final touches have been completed, we make a comprehensive inspection to make sure that absolutely nothing has been missed and that you are completely satisfied.

We will probably ask your permission to take photographs to show to other prospective clients in the same way that we did for you.

Technical Stuff

The majority of kitchen furniture, including some very expensive ranges, is largely made out of chipboard. You will not find chipboard in a Porter Robinson kitchen.
We believe in the age-old principle of putting metals fixings into wood not sawdust.
In five years or less you will not be faced with a roomful of sagging doors and wobbly drawers.

The cabinet without the front, called the carcass, may be made from a variety of materials. Most popular are birch plywood or solid red pine. The draw boxes are dovetailed, made of solid wood and are mounted on self-parking runners.

All our drawers and draw fronts are "in frame" on butt hinges, similar to an internal house door. They look better than "lay on" face mounted doors and drawers and they remain aligned.

In short, not only are we creating a product with the best aesthetics, we are creating one which is cost effective and built using real engineering principles and which will last and last, out living cheaper alternatives many times over.
